HOW IT WORKS

ABSOLUTELY NO QUIZZES OR FINAL EXAM - 100% PASS RATE*

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has APPROVED the New York Safety Program IPIRP course for all users. Please read the following information then click on the Register button below to begin your course. Click here to view our approval certificate.

Course Details
Our online course is very similar to our classroom course. We teach you important defensive driving techniques and we refresh your memory about current traffic laws. The course includes interactive activities, pictures and videos.

By DMV regulations the course is 320 minutes long, but you can start and stop whenever you want. When you log back in you will automatically be taken back to where you left off.

Student ID Validation
The New York State DMV requires all IPIRP courses (including this one) to validate the student's identity throughout the course. This means that every Internet defensive driving school has to make sure that only the correct person takes and gets credit for the course. At NYSP, we want to make this as easy for you as possible, so we let you choose the ID validation method you prefer. You will choose your method during registration.

Option 1: Biometric Face Recognition Using a Web Camera
This ID validation method is our most popular because it is the easiest and it means we can give you an online course without any quizzes or a final exam.

After starting the course you will be asked to enroll images of your face and driver's license and then validate your identity using a web camera. This method is provided seamlessly and securely over the Internet by CompletelyOnline.com® -- with no software to download. You will need a web camera for this method, so If you do not already have one, you can buy a web camera here for $5 including shipping (the camera is yours to keep).

Option 2: Biometric Keystroke Recognition
If for any reason you prefer not to do Option 1, Option 2 is provided to you as an alternative. The DMV requires that students who choose this method pass a 20-question exam at the end of the course. By DMV rules you must answer at least 75% (15 out of 20) correct in order to pass the course. You will be given 3 chances to take the final exam. If you don’t score at least 15 correct after 3 attempts, DMV regulations require that you be failed from the course.

This method requires that you give us a sample of your keystroke by typing a word or phrase. The program remembers your style of typing (your keystroke) and then requires you to type the exact same way throughout the course.

Hardware/Software/Bandwidth Requirements
The NYSP IPIRP course will work with both PC and Mac computers and with any major web browser. In addition, the browser needs to support JavaScript and have the Adobe Flash plug-in version 8 or greater. An Internet connection with a dial up modem of 28.8 bps or any high speed connection is also needed to connect to the course. If you are using ID validation Options 1, you must have an available USB port.

Payment Methods
NYSP accepts all major credit and debit cards as payment for the course. Payment must be made during registration.

Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program (IPIRP)
The Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program (IPIRP), approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles, is available through private companies or corporations called “Course sponsors” throughout New York State. Each qualifying course must meet strict standards for safe driving information presented and program effectiveness. If you complete an approved IPIRP course:

  • It will help refresh your driving knowledge with a review of time-tested safe driving tips and an overview of today’s vehicle and traffic laws.
  • You may be eligible to reduce as many as four (4) points on your driving record. The DMV computer will automatically note your eligibility to receive the reduction.
  • If you are the principal operator of a motor vehicle, you will receive a minimum 10% reduction in the base rate of your automobile and motorcycle liability and collision insurance premiums each year for three years.

Please see the DMV's C-32A brochure for more information.

*Applies to Option 1 ID validation method only
